Understanding how lightning forms and why it’s so dangerous can help you stay safe the next time a storm rolls through your neighborhood.
⚡ Lightning in the U.S.
Every year in the United States, lightning flashes about 25 million times. Each one carries enough energy to light a small city for a moment—and every one of them has the potential to seriously injure or kill. While fatalities have decreased in recent decades thanks to increased awareness and better forecasting, lightning remains one of the leading weather-related killers in the U.S. More people survive lightning strikes than die from them, but many victims are left with long-term health complications.
🌩️ How Thunderstorms (and Lightning) Develop
Thunderstorms often begin on warm days when the sun heats the ground, causing bubbles of warm air to rise. As this air lifts, it cools and condenses into cumulus clouds. Continued heating and rising air can grow these into towering cumulus clouds, a sign that a thunderstorm may be forming.
Eventually, the cloud develops into a classic anvil-shaped thunderstorm, with layers that hold different forms of precipitation:
- Top layer: Small, positively charged ice crystals
- Middle layer: Mixture of ice and small hail (negatively charged)
- Lower layer: Rain and melting hail
Inside the cloud, particles collide and separate based on weight and electrical charge. The result is a storm cloud with a positively charged top, a negatively charged middle, and a small positive area near the cloud’s base. These charges also influence the ground below: negative charges in the cloud pull positive charges up from the ground, creating the perfect setup for a lightning strike.
⚡ How Lightning Happens
Air typically acts as an insulator between these charges—but when the electrical imbalance becomes too great, that barrier breaks down. The result is a rapid release of electricity in the form of lightning.
Lightning can take several forms:
- Intra-cloud lightning (IC): Flashes within the cloud itself
- Cloud-to-ground lightning (CG): Strikes between the cloud and the earth
- These are the most dangerous to humans and property
Even within cloud-to-ground lightning, there are different types, depending on where in the cloud the lightning originates. But all of them happen in a fraction of a second, delivering millions of volts and potentially striking up to 10 miles away from the storm—well outside what many people think is the “danger zone.”

Thunder is caused by the superheating of air as lightning travels through it. That heat causes the air to expand rapidly, creating shock waves we hear as thunder. On average, thunder can be heard from about 10 miles away—and if you hear it, you’re close enough to be struck.
